A happy marriage could help men live longer, healthier life by lowering their risk of stroke, says a new study. A study of more than 10,000 men presented at this year’s International Stroke Conference found that single men and men who were “unsatisfied” with their marriage had a 64% higher risk of fatal stroke than happily married men.
“There is increasing evidence of an association between depression and cardiovascular disease,” says Professor Craig Anderson, director of the Neurological and Mental Division at The George Institute. “There maybe a neurobiological explanation for the link: changes in blood chemistry or nervous system function that make the blood more sticky and prone to clots, or the heart prone to rhythm changes. He goes on to state….”if a man is not happy he does not take care of himself.”
“Research says that married men benefit from spouse monitoring their health and lifestyle habits, but this doesn’t apply so much to married women,” says Tracey Feltham, principal clinical psychologist of Core Psychology in Sydney. “Women are more likely to talk to friends about their health concerns, so they don’t look to their spouse for that kind of support. This lack of an in-house health monitor could be one of the reasons why incidence of stroke is also higher among single men.”
